Tumbler Ridge families are suing OpenAI
Seven families of victims injured or killed in the Tumbler Ridge school shooting in Canada have filed lawsuits against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman. The families accuse the company of negligence after OpenAI’s systems flagged the suspected shooter’s ChatGPT activity involving gun violence conversations but the company decided not to alert police, allegedly to protect its reputation and upcoming IPO. OpenAI only deactivated the account; the shooter simply created a new one following OpenAI’s own instructions. The families also claim GPT-4o’s ‘defective’ design played a part in the mass shooting. Altman has apologized, saying he was deeply sorry they did not alert law enforcement.
